History of Blogging & a Bunch of Other Things

August 3, 2008 – 10:00 am

OK, so its Sunday and I felt like doing something a little different here.

Have we ever sat back and thought about when the first ‘blog’ started?

Do we know much about the History of Blogging?

I love history (history channel is great) and so I felt the urge to do a little “History of Blogging” and see what I could find, that I already didn’t know.

Let’s go all the way back to 1992 to start.

  • March 18th 1992 – Windows 3.1 Was Released.

  • May 25th 1992 – Jay Leno becomes the new host of NBC’s Tonight Show after Johnny Carson retires. (Jay Leno’s last video taping of the Tonight Show will be May 29th 2009.)

  • September 12th 1992 – Dr Mae Jemison becomes the first African-American woman to travel into space on the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

  • Tim Berners-Lee begins to keep a list of all of the new websites as they hit the World Wide Web.

Let’s take a look at some things that happened in 1993 as well.

  • April 30th 1993 – The World Wide Web is Born at CERN.

  • July 27th 1993 – Windows NT 3.1 is the first version of Microsoft’s line of Windows NT OS that’s released to manufacturing.

  • August 17th 1993 – For the first time ever, the public is allowed into Buckingham Palace.

  • November 11th 1993 – Microsoft Releases Windows 3.11 for Workgroups to Manufacturing.

So, want to know what else happened in June of 1993? NCSA started a new “What’s New!” List of websites AND do we all remember Netscape? Well they began running the “What’s New!” List of sites.

Okay so now we are going to take a look into 1994.

  • January 26th 1994 – A Man Fires 2 Blank Shots at Prince Charles while in Sydney Australia.

  • April 8th 1994 – Lead singer of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain is found dead in his home in Seattle, Washington.

  • December 15th – The very first version of Netscape Navigator is released.

Do you know who Justin Hall is? Well he launched a website called “Justin’s Home Page”. The site had links to reviews of other sites and would later actually become Links from the Underground.

Let’s now skip ahead a few years and head into 1997. Let’s see a bit of what happened in ‘97.

  • June 7th 1997 – A user known as “_eci” publishes his code on Win 95 and Win NT which would later become WinNuke. Due to this distribution, Microsoft is forced to release a security patch.

  • August 6th 1997 – Microsoft buys $150 million share of financially troubled Apple.

  • August 31st 1997 - After a car accident that happened shorty after midnight in the Pont De L’Alma road tunnel in Paris, Diana, Princess of Wales was pronounced dead at 04:00.

  • September 5th 1997 – Mother Theresa passes away due to heart failure in Kolkata, India.

Have you ever heard of Frontier Software or Scripting News? In 1997 the company that Dave Winer heads, releases Radio Userland known as one of the very first blogging software tools. Also in 1997, SlashDot launches news for nerds and Jorn Barger introduced the term ‘weblog’ and blogging continued to develop.

Lets look into 1998.

  • February 10th 1998 – A college dropout becomes the first person convicted of a hate crime that was comitted in cyberspace.

  • May 18th 1998 – Microsoft has an antitrust case filed against them from The United States Department Of Justice and 20 U.S. States.

  • June 25th 1998 – Microsoft officially releases the first edition of Windows 98

What also happened was that the first list of blogsites we’re plublished on CamWorld by Cameron Barrett.

What about 1999:

  • June 1st 1999 – Napster Debuts

  • June 21st 1999 – Apple releases their first iBook (We gotta be honest, it was ugly!)

  • July 22nd 1999 – MSN’s first version is released by Microsoft.

  • August 31st – Apple releases the Power Macintosh G4

In the blogging world, it was announced by Peter Merholz that he would pronounce web blogs as ‘Wee-blog’. The first portal that was devoted to blogs began with about 50 listings by Brigitte Eaton. Hey do we remember Pitas? Some of us might, well it was launched as the first free ‘build your own blog’ web tool.

And last but not least in August of 1999 (We hope you all know this one) Pyra, releases blogger which still popularizes blogging with mainstream web users and went on to become the most popular (but certainly not the best) web based blogging tool to date.

So do you find this stuff interesting like I do?
